Teaching Paleontology with the Extreme Fossil Dig Kit!

disclosure-for-site

November 4, 2021 Carlee at Fun Learning Life 51 Comments

A special thank you goes out to Horizon Group USA for sending my family The Young Scientists Club Extreme Fossil Dig Kit to review. Opinions expressed are that of my own.

Whether homeschooling, wanting to add enrichment to your child’s education, or looking for a holiday gift, the Extreme Fossil Dig Kit is a wonderful way to keep kids entertained.

Throughout the years, I have facilitated various activities with my children to teach them about Paleontology. Sometimes it has been through a Dinosaur Bones Craft, other times it has been through a visit to a local museum.

Either way, I have found that the more hands on my kids can be, the better they seem to understand the concept of what I am teaching.

The Young Scientists Club Extreme Fossil Dig is an excellent way to introduce children to Paleontology and a great STEM activity.

For ages 8 and up, this kit includes 18 real fossils that are excavated through a block called the Fossil Dig. In addition, there is an activity guide, Chisel, Mallet, Brush, Magnifying glass and sorting bags to help break down the clay like material and examine the fossils. All you need is a pan large enough to break dig down in.

As each item is revealed, it can be compared to 15 Collector Cards that have information about each fossil. There are details like, when this animal was present on the earth, where its habitat would have been, and if the animal species still exists today.

Kids will also get a kick out of the dung fossil and the fact that there is a dinosaur bone. In addition, once the dig is complete, you and your child can play the 4 bonus games listed in the activity guide. These include Fossil Bingo, Fossil Facts, Prehistoric Times, and Extinct or Not.

My youngest son and my daughter had a great time working on this activity together. My son even took his fossils to school to show his classmates since they have been learning about Dinosaurs and trace fossils.

My kids enjoyed this kit so much, that I decided to order another Extreme Fossil Dig Kit to give to my nephew for Christmas.

The Extreme Fossil Dig retails for $19-$20 and can be found online at Amazon and in stores like Walmart. The Young Scientists Club did a great job with this activity and I appreciate the quality of the materials and the fossils.

We all love to craft - homemade gifts are the best. Working on the annual tree ornament with each doing a section. We would share this with the whole family (3-9) and create it to be age appropriate so all can participate rather than be left out.
