Good Food At Home Cookbook Series Review and Giveaway! Check Out these Awesome Chocolate Chip Cookies That Were Easy To Make!

disclosure-for-site

October 16, 2011 Carlee at Fun Learning Life 66 Comments

Thanks to Sellers Publishing,  I was sent a set of cookbooks from the Good Food At Home series to review here on At Home Moma.

The Good Food At Home series includes cookbooks for Slow Cooker Classics From Around the World, Make-Ahead Meals, Quick, Cheap Comfort Food, Leftover Makeovers, and Weeknight Desserts.

Each of these books contains recipes that either give the convenience of planning ahead, quick preparation, ease of preparation, or frugality.

I was in the mood for something sweet, so I decided to prepare the Chocolate Chip Platter Cookies on pg. 21 of Weeknight Desserts. This cookie dough was supposed to resemble store bought cookie dough (it could be cut into squares and stored that way), and I thought it would be neat for the kids to see me prepare them.

This dessert was not only easy to make, but the dough could be kept in the refrigerator for up to a week or frozen up to 2 months.

The recipe used basic ingredients like flour, baking soda, sugar, salt, an egg, and most were things that I already had.  All I really needed to do was pick up brown sugar and semi-sweet chocolate chips.  I was even able to substitute the butter for margarine. This was a very convenient recipe to make and frugal, since it contained standard ingredients.

The best part of course was serving fresh cookies to the kids and seeing the smiles and chocolate on their faces. In addition, I only made a few at a time and stored the rest in the refrigerator, so each night of that week the kids got freshly baked cookies.

Icons in Quick, Cheap Comfort Food.

What I really like about this series of cookbooks, was the use of icons to point out the benefits of each recipe.  For example, in a couple of the cookbooks, there is an icon for a calendar that tells you that you can or must prepare the recipe ahead of time. In Quick, Cheap Comfort Food there are icons to tell you the approximate cost so you can plan your weekly budget. Plus, in all of the cookbooks there is an icon for a chef’s hat, that give you tips on how to make the recipe preparation easier or to help avoid mistakes in the preparation.

Plus, I recommend that you read the captions before each recipe. It was neat to see that these recipes have been prepared by a real person, and many of them have a personal story behind them.

Each of these books retail at $14.95. Slow Cooker Classics From Around the World ISBN13: 978-1-4162-0637-8, Make-Ahead Meals ISBN13: 978-1-4162-0622-4, Quick, Cheap Comfort Food ISBN13: 978-1-4162-0781-8, and Leftover Makeovers ISBN13: 978-1-4162-0607-1 was authored by Victoria Shearer, and Weeknight Desserts ISBN13: 978-1-4162-0590-6 was authored by Beatrice Ojakangas. I love tacos and burritos at home to make and then make a nacho with the left overs. Be sure to make a lot to have left overs. I prefer to drive to Papa Murphys's and grab a canadian bacon and pineapple and cook it as a favorite. Did you know they will sell their crust? It is like 2 or 3 dollars and then you can make your own? I am going to try this. Rita Spratlen rj_angel_house@yahoo.com
