Keeping My Family Happy, I’m Always Trying!

Making sure that my family is happy is something that is very important to me. I want my children and husband to know that I love them and care for them, and I am always looking for ways to put a smile on their faces.

SocialMoms and Farm Rich asked Mom Bloggers like myself to write a blog post about “how do you keep your family happy”

Well I have to admit that keeping my family happy at all times can be a challenge, but it truly is the effort that counts. So here are a few of the things that we do in our home, that makes us smile.

Giving each family member individual attention. With all the things that are required of us on a day to day basis including school, work, sports, cleaning house, and everything else, sometimes spending one on one time with each family member can be a difficult thing to do.  I find though that you really need to find the time to be with each person in your household.

It can be as simple as going for a ride and grabbing a coffee or sitting down and playing with each child.  I like to talk to my son about what he did at school or ask him about something he did special at one of his sports activities.  For both my kids, I have them pick out a book and take a moment to read it to them individually. And as for my husband, scheduling a date night or going off together for a long weekend is the best way to get some one on one time.

Making special meals.  Everyone in my family has a special dish that they like so I always make it a point to prepare meals for them that I know they will like.  I also make it a point to let them know that I made it specifically for them.  It makes them feel special to know that I made it for them.  My husband loves lasagna so I definitely make an effort to prepare it around our anniversary.

Another thing I do is prepare special breakfast meals.  I will add food coloring, cut out shapes around holidays, and give the food names around the holidays as well. The kids really get a kick out it.

Spending time together as a family. We recently went on vacation as a family to Disney and the kids had a great time.  I have to say I had a great time as well.  We got away for 4 days from all the distractions in life and could just really enjoy spending time with one another.  We went out to eat, stayed up late, didn’t make the beds, and just had A LOT of fun.

We usually get to spend time together as a family on the weekends as well.  We will go the park,  go to amusement parks, and watch a movie together. Sometimes during the week, we will just go for a ride.  Just that little bit of time together keeps us happy.

Praise for accomplishments. I find that the easiest way to bring happiness into my family’s life is through telling my kids how great they are and thanking my spouse for the hard work that he does.  I always make an effort to tell my son how great a drawing is, or how awesome it is that he read a book.  When my daughter puts together a puzzle, says her ABC’s, or puts away a toys, I tell her how great or good she is. Both of my kids just beam when they get praise.

Of course, I am very appreciative of the hard work my husband does because I am very fortunate to be able to stay at home with my kids, and not a day goes by that I realize how lucky I am.  I probably don’t say it enough, but I do thank my husband for giving me the gift of time with my kids.

Doing things for myself. This is probably one of the most important things to keeping happiness in my home.  Often times, a mom gets over looked in the happiness department, because she is so busy trying to take care of everyone else’s needs.

Have you ever heard the saying “If Mom isn’t happy, then no one is happy” well this is true.   When I feel like I am not getting enough time to myself, I start to feel frustrated, and I feel like I am spinning.  So to fix this, I make it a point to grab myself a coffee with friends, set aside time for blogging, or go shopping.

Doing a few things for myself, can go along way in the happiness department, which in turn recharges my battery. This gives me the energy to keep on keeping everyone else happy.

What do you do in your home to keep your family happy?  What do you do for yourself?  I would love to hear your ideas.
