Has your family been curious about how to decorate kindness rocks, or are you simply looking for another way to pass these onto others? See how we made a Father’s Day Paper Weight and How To Decorate Kindness Rocks!
My kiddos and I are huge fans of painting rocks and have been leaving a few of these gems around our community.
These small pieces of artwork are an easy craft to put together, keep little ones entertained, and can inspire plenty of creativity.
It really has been rewarding to pass these treasures onto random individuals, however they can be just as fun to gift to a family member or friend. From firsthand experience we left one in a neighbor’s flower bed, and she was so appreciative that she took it inside to preserve it.

Now with Father’s Day around the corner and already having most of the supplies needed for this activity, we were inspired to transform these Kindness Rocks into a paperweight gift for their Dad.
If you would like to recreate this Father’s Day Craft with your family, here is what you will need:
River Rocks or Stones
Acrylic Paint that is Non-Toxic
Small Paint Brushes
Permanent Markers
Non-Toxic Sealant AKA Modge Podge
Newspaper
Optional: Cups to squeeze the paint in or mini paint trays, and an apron.
Tip: You can find most of these items at your local craft store as well as look for River Rocks or Stones at a Hardware Store.
Directions on how to decorate kindness rocks:
Before the painting starts, first you will need to select a large rock with a smooth surface. Then, wash and dry the river rock removing any excess moisture with a towel. I suggest allowing these to completely dry before you start any painting.
To begin decorating the rocks, you will need to lay down newspaper for easy clean up, have a few paintbrushes handy, and select the color or colors of paint. I also had my children wear aprons to protect their clothing.
Tip: There are sets that have a small amount of basic acrylic colors and you can also purchase full size squeeze bottles.
Now because this was a craft for their Dad, we used colors that we thought he would appreciate like brown, blue, white, and yellow.
To start with the paint, begin with a base layer on one side of the rock and allow it to dry. The acrylic paint will set very quickly and then you can repeat this on the other side.
Once dried, your child can then add a layer of paint to decorate the rock or use the permanent markers to draw on the surface.
My daughter ended up combining equal parts white, brown, and yellow to make a tan color for a face and once dried added features like eyes, a nose, and a mouth with facial hair.
We then added sayings like “Happy Father’s Day”, “Dad you ROCK!”, and “#1 Dad” on a painted yellow Trophy with the markers.
Once the rocks were completed, the designs dried overnight and the next day, we added a layer of Modge Podge to help preserve the paint as well as a little shine to the decoration.
Again, I suggest putting this on one side first, allowing it to dry, and then repeating on the other side.
This Father’s Day Paper Weight is not only a great way for your child to express their love of their DAD, but it is a practical gift to secure receipts or loose pieces of paper at home or work.
I hope your family enjoys this craft as well and you find my tutorial on how to decorate kindness rocks helpful!
