Question of the Day 9/27/2011! Kids and Housework.

My daughter helping by putting in the laundry.

From the time my kids could walk, I have been having them help with the household chores. They are now 2 and 5.

Now that does not mean, that I have had them scrub the floors, wash/ dry/ and fold the clothes, or vacuum the entire house, but I have had them help with chores based on their abilities.

The kids do things like grab the trash cans from the rooms for trash day, help set the table, empty their plates after dinner, or bring their clothes to the laundry room.  They even help make their own beds, with a little assistance from mom.

And what is really great, is they do this because it is fun and not because of an allowance.  They actually fight over helping me out. I’m sure as they get older they will put up a fight not to help,  but for now, I am enjoying it.

So with that being said, do your kids help with the housework?  If so, at what age did they start? And, the big question is, Are you giving them an allowance (if so, at what age did you start)?

I would love to hear your thoughts!  Feel free to comment below the post.

My daughter does get an allowance. But I have Rhuematoid arthritis so my 11yr old does ALOT. She will sweep or mop floors for me, or she even knows how to sort and do the laundry. Only because in the 11yrs of her life I've had to have 8surgeries. Do to this I'm down for weeks at a time and she's my helper. Yes occasionally I get the roll of the eyes but all I have to do is tell her my hands aren't working right or my legs don't want to bend and she does it with No complaining.

My kids help as much as I allow them to. I'm one of those particular moms, so it's not done right unless I do it. I really need to loosen up a bit. My kids do not get an allowance. However, I buy them things that they really, really want from time to time and it all evens out. It's important they learn the value of work and money when they're young.

My kids help out when there is something they can do, since they could walk. We just started giving my older daughter (almost 5) an allowance every day that she does her "chores." They are simple things that I want her to really get in the habit of doing, making her bed, putting her dishes by the sink, and picking up the toys in her room after she is done playing with them. We only started doing it because she was fighting doing ANYTHING that involved cleaning her own stuff but ask her if she wants to clean the bathroom and she runs to get the sponge, lol.

What a great post! When we were growing up, we had to earn those special things we wanted so bad! My daughter receives an allowance and that has taught her both responsibilites and how to manage her money.

My kids help clean and have since they could understand simple directions and concepts. They don't get paid yet, but with my 6 year old daughter I am sure it's coming soon. Right now they get magnets on their behavior chart for helping mom and dad in addition to other behaviors, which their reward is tv time. The kinds of chores they do is helping with the garbage and recycling, cleaning up their toys, putting their dirty clothes in the laundry, cleaning the table, vacuuming, sweeping the floors, and sometimes putting their clean laundry away. I am like one of the other mothers where I am particular and sometimes I just let it go to get them the experience of helping out and learning. I touch up after they move on to the next chore :)

I grew up in the country on a farm. I remember helping my dad cut wood at the age of 7 and fixing horse fence at 2am with my siblings because something spooked the horses and they got loose. I didn't get an allowance. My dad would tell me my allowance was living indoors with heat and eating 3 meals a day.
