Tips To Making Tie-Dyeing Easier!

August 7, 2021 Carlee at Fun Learning Life 55 Comments

A special thank you goes out to Horizon Group for sending my family a Just My Style Rainbow Tie-Dye Kit to review. Opinions expressed are that of my own.

Tips To Making Tie Dyeing Easier!

Over the past year and a half, I have found plenty of ways to keep my kids entertained at home. This summer we went on vacation but still tried to limit our adventures out and one of the ways we did that was through Tie-Dyeing.

Recently, we went on a trip with extended family and the plan was to tie-dye while we stayed at a resort. We decided to administer this activity on a patio and since this was spread amongst multiple people, this would actually be an inexpensive craft. Not to mention it was a fun way to spend time together as a family and a great reason to not leave the property.

Of course I am a planner, so before we even vacationed I had already packed up supplies we needed to make Tie-Dyeing Easier. I find that the better prepared I am, the less stressful the craft is due to missing needed components.

The goal was to avoid another trip to the store and I am happy to say that the craft was a success.

Tips To Making Tie-Dyeing Easier!

Purchase a Just My Style Rainbow Tie-Dye Kit–

Instead of trying to piece together what you need for Tie-Dyeing, I find it easier to just use a kit. Typically they will come with gloves, rubber bands, and enough colors to create cool designs. In addition, they have detailed instructions and ideas for Tie-Dye Designs.

Watch a Tutorial-

My daughter is an expert at Tie-Dye and this not only happened from practice, but she also found numerous videos of different ways to tie-dye. I actually let her show the other kids how to do it and this time we used the technique of using a fork to create a spiral.

Pick up multi packs of White T-Shirts-

Definitely get plenty of items to tie-dye so the kids don’t finish too quickly. We picked up 2 packs of different sized T-shirts and this was enough to give each child 3 shirts to work with. FYI, the Just My Style Rainbow Tie-Dye Kit can dye up to 18 projects.

Tips To Making Tie Dyeing Easier!

Use Disposable Aluminum containers-

I had seen someone else do this with a grill cover on top of an aluminum pan and though I would give it a try. It worked out well because it caught the dye and was easy to wash off, dry, and reuse. You can find these containers at most stores where housewares are sold like a Dollar Tree,

Have Extra Rubber Bands-

My kids always use a ton of rubber bands on their creations so I just make it a habit of having extra.

Tips To Making Tie Dyeing Easier!

Zipper Bags –

Once you are finished dyeing, you will need to place the items into a sealed container for 4-8 hours. If you can wait for 24 hours, your colors will set even better. Zipper bags work really well for this.

Cover Surfaces and Clothing-

Make clean up easier by covering surfaces with newspaper or a table cloth (that was the one thing I did forget on our trip). Also protect clothing with aprons or oversized old t-shirts.

Paper Towels-

You will definitely needs these to clean up spills and to dry surfaces.

Have you ever tie-dyed before? What tips do you have to make it easier?

I hope you find these Tips To Making Tie Dyeing Easier helpful for your next activity.

We tye dye everyyear. We lay a sheet of painters plastic on the picnic table all the kids wear gloves and we use twine to tie our shirt knots instead of rubber bands. They make tighter bands and less leaking of colors in between. Always cold wash in clean water before drying.

We do enjoy doing tie-dye on shirts. My daughter has done it quite a few times. She tries to work outside in case some messes occur.

Yes, I have tie-dyed before. Make sure you soak the shirts for about a day in the soda ash solution. Use good dye and gloves. Let it sit for a full 24 hours before you rinse.
