Starting Seeds In An Egg Carton! The Kids And I Worked On A DIY Garden Project Together!

Starting Seeds in an Egg Carton for Gardening

My hubby asked me what I wanted for Mother’s Day and I requested an EarthBox. It did this because it is gardening, and it is something that the kiddos and I can work on together.

The kids always get a kick out of eating items we grow, and we have been lucky enough to actually have strawberries and peppers in the past. Now we have basil and mint in our boxes, and I also have a huge pot with a ton of tomatoes that are ready to ripen.

So in preparation of my Mother’s Day Gift, a week or so ago I cut apart a cantaloupe and saved the seeds by drying them out in a cup.

Next, I poked a hole in the bottom of each egg slot in an egg carton with a pencil for drainage. (A great way to upcycle)

Then, the kids and I added the potting soil and seeds to the egg carton.  After that I watered the seeds, closed the carton up, and left it outside.  This made a little mini green house.

Throughout the week, I checked to make sure the soil stayed moist in the egg carton and after a couple of days it was filled with Cantaloupe seedlings.

On Mother’s Day weekend, as a family we went to the EarthBox store, and picked out a new box. It came with a kit that included fertilizer, dolomite, and soil.

Once we got home, we transplanted the seedlings into the new EarthBox and the kids watered the plants, we all had a blast!

Well done for finding projects where you can include your kids, and help them to have the satisfaction of producing something that is useful, and tasty also.

Love seeing earth-friendly gardening ideas, way to recycle! I also like using egg shells for seed starting. Makes it super easy to transplant them as the shell will compost. What a great Mother's Day activity!

My son's last day of school was today, so this will be something fun for us to do. We haven't started any seeds yet for this year. I have an egg carton that is almost empty and am going to run to store for seeds tomorrow.
