Hearty Split Pea Soup Recipe With Ham!

When I was little, my Grandparents would make up a Split Pea Soup Recipe.

It was something special that I associated with my childhood and my time with them and throughout the years whenever I would have this soup, I would think of those special moments.

Now you would think that after all these years I would have made up a batch to share with my family, but time had escaped me and I wasn’t sure if my kids would even like it. I mean, Split Pea Soup is probably not high up on a 7 year olds choice of meals.

Not too long ago, I was volunteering up at my Mom’s work, and she had grabbed me lunch which included Split Pea Soup.

Of course I enjoyed every bit of it and finally decided that it was time for me to prepare my own Hearty Split Pea Soup Recipe with Ham.

I went to the store, picked up a package of dried peas, chicken broth, and grabbed some additional ingredients that I thought would go well in the soup.

Long story short, I made up a batch in the slow cooker and thought I was going to have a weeks worth of Split Pea Soup.

Not the case at all, my kids tried it and were completely sold on the taste. The 7 year old wanted seconds, I think I had enough leftover the next day for one or 2 more servings.

So with all of this social distancing, I thought this would be a great recipe to try again while we make our own set of new memories. However, instead of Chicken Broth (due to lack there of) we had to use Beef Broth. It worked fine and no one was disappointed.

Since it was a hit twice, I wanted to share this recipe just in case you would like to try it out with your family.

According to the soup package it makes 13 servings (for my crowd it was 8)

What You Will Need:

1 16oz Bag of Green Split Peas

6 Cups of Chicken or Beef Broth

1 8oz Package of Diced Ham

1 Cup of Baby Carrots

3 Large Potatoes

Directions:

First wash and rinse the peas. Then, put 6 cups of broth into the slow cooker and add the peas. Cook this on high for 4 hours.

Then, peel and chop up the potatoes into small cubes. Also, chop up the carrots and stir these, the potatoes and ham into the soup.

Move the temperature to low and cook for an additional hour. Serve immediately.

Tip: If you want softer potatoes, when you move it to low cook for 2 hours.

This is a thick soup and definitely a meal. We even shared some with a neighbor and she raved about it.

I hope your family also enjoys this Split Pea Soup, we will be making it again in the next couple of weeks.
