I was sent a movie to review from Phase4Films called, The Fat Boy Chronicles. This film, which touches on many subjects including bullying and self esteem in teens, was inspired by a true story. It is directed by Jason Winn and is based on the acclaimed novel by Diane Lang and Michael Buchanan.
This movie addresses many of the issues that children and teenagers may face in their lives. Whether it may be abuse at home, poor self image, bullying at school, or academic issues, the theme is that no one is perfect, and so we should not judge our peers. The main character Jimmy Winterpock is over weight and because of this, he is tormented by his school mates, and lacks self confidence. He decides to focus on losing weight, exercises, and through this change, regains his self confidence and even a girlfriend by the end of the movie.
I feel that this is must see for children heading into a middle school situation. I remember that puberty was the time that a lot of teasing began in my school years. The early teens, are a really hard time for boys and girls alike because so much is changing physically and mentally. Plus, teens become more independent in their studies at this point and how you are treated in life can affect how well you perform academically.
This is a movie that teaches those who might bully, how it affects others, and it shows those who may feel different, that they are not alone. As a parent, you may want to watch the film ahead of time, and I highly suggest watching this with your kids, so you can answer any questions that they may have.
