The mix makes 1 lb of hamburger, it is high in protein and is a good source of fiber and iron. The ingredients include soy, wheat, among a variety of spices.
In order to make the Hamburger mix, all you have to do is add cold water, refrigerate for 15 minutes to hydrate it, and then cook. I actually refrigerated it over night and used the mixture to make spaghetti sauce.
I browned the mix in a pan, and as you can see, it resembles ground beef. I then I added the marinara. The vegetarian mix is definitely more absorbent that regular ground beef.
The final product looks like something between ground turkey and ground beef in marinara sauce. It tastes different that beef, but again it reminds me of ground turkey. It has a good flavor, and if I were to make a hamburger out of it, I probably would not add anything to it.
I actually fed it to my family without telling them that I substituted in a meat alternative. They ate it and afterward I asked my husband what he thought. He said, that he knew it was different, but that it tasted pretty good.
Personally, I am partial to ground beef, but I think for someone who enjoys ground beef but has to make a change in their eating habits, this would be a good alternative. And of course, if you are a vegan or vegetarian, this would meet your dietary restrictions.
