When I was a little girl, I would set off on bike riding adventures all on my own. I was an independent child and would head out to cruise or to meet up with friends checking my watch to be back by dinner time.
Of course I would usually be running a little late and would hear my Mom yelling out for me in the distance.
Fast forward to my own kids and I can admit that they have never been bike riding like that. I know about the dangers and between the news and my own experiences, it is hard to send them out there alone.
I can honestly say that I am probably more on the helicopter side of parenting and get anxiety if they even want to go around the circle of our street.
My 2 older kids are getting bigger and I want them to become more independent and have the same fun opportunities.
So what would be a good solution to help me overcome the anxiety of my children bike riding? Well first off, reiterating ways to stay safe, example: wearing their helmets, looking both ways, and not talking to strangers. I also feel that setting perimeters of how long they can stay out as well as keeping their exploration to our neighborhood would be a great idea.
In addition, I want to remind them to make good choices when Mom and Dad are not around, as well as sticking together when they go out. Now I could also give my 2 kiddos access to a cell phone, but I want them to play and not be looking at a device.
As parents we have to teach our children about safety, but what about a communication tool without added distractions?
