Mother’s Day Button Card Craft with Handprint!

See how my daughter and I put together a Mother’s Day Button Card Craft with Handprint that I can continue to cherish as she gets older.

Mother’s Day Button Card Craft with Handprint!

If this past school year has taught me anything, it has been the ability of parents and kids everywhere to pivot when faced with a new or challenging situation. Not only did we have to adjust to online learning and then back to brick and mortar, but even everyday school life and after school activities have changed due to the Pandemic.

As many Moms and Dads continue to facilitate learning from home as well as navigate current restrictions, I think celebrating parents during their special holidays this year is even more significant.

Now speaking of pivoting, I started brainstorming a Mother’s Day Craft with my daughter and quickly discovered that the supplies we were going to use were just not coming together as intended. Sometimes we experiment and it becomes apparent that the activity is either too difficult or the supply cannot be used in the way we envisioned.

The important part is that my kids and I get to spend time together when we do these activities, and I would rather keep it simple to maximize the fun. In this instance, getting back to the basics was best and my daughter and I ended up creating a Mother’s Day Button Card Craft with Handprint!

If you would also like to make this card with your family, this is what you will need:

2 Sheets of different color Construction Paper

Non-Toxic Acrylic Paints, Green, Pink, etc.

Buttons

Crayons

Safety Scissors

Foam Brush

Glue

Tip: Have your child wear an oversized shirt or apron, keep paper towels on hand, and have something to put the paint on like a paper plate.

Directions:

To get started with the Mother’s Day Button Card Craft with Handprint, first fold a piece of construction paper in half and use the foam brush to put acrylic paint on your child’s hand to stamp on the inside.

Make sure you put on a good amount of paint on their hand to create a clear print and to make removal from the paper easier. Then, write the date up in the corner and set this aside to dry. Have your child wash their hands before you proceed any further.

FYI, you can find containers of random buttons along with many of the supplies featured in this craft at a dollar store or craft store.

Next, have your child either select 3 buttons or set aside 3 buttons for them to use in the craft. Then, take the second sheet of construction paper and cut out a vase shape to go on the front of the card. Have your child write “Happy Mother’s Day” on the vase shape.

Once the Handprint has dried, close the card, and glue the vase shape to the bottom front. We then dipped my daughter’s pointer finger into acrylic paint and used it to make flower shapes on the front of the card.

After applying each color, I cleaned the paint off her hand with a paper towel. If making the flower shapes with paint is too difficult for your child, simply have them draw 3 flower shapes with the crayons.

After the flower petals begin to dry, draw stems with a green crayon. My daughter then used her thumb to make leaves with the green acrylic paint, again this is something that could be drawn with a green crayon.

To finish the Mother’s Day Card Craft, glue the buttons in the center of the flower shapes and allow this to dry. We ended up making 2 of these cards, one for me to keep and the other to give away.

Mother’s Day Button Card Craft with Handprint!

I really love this Mother’s Day Button Card Craft with Handprint because I now have a snapshot in time of my daughter’s hand, and it really was a nice activity to work on together. I hope your family also enjoys creating this card and you have a wonderful time celebrating Mother’s Day.

I am very much looking to spending Mother's Day with my daughters. They love to make crafts, and I especially love crafts made with their hand prints. The button flowers are super cute in the cards. I remember using buttons in crafts when I was a little girl. How fun! Happy Mother's Day to you! :-)
