THE WAR WITH GRANDPA is a film that is fun for the entire family. My kids and I watched this together during our break on Blu-ray and really enjoyed the comedy and overall story. We shared a lots of laughs and appreciated the relationship between a grandparent and his grandchildren.
Between the pranks and the physical comedy, I would describe this as a Grumpy Old Men meets Home Alone kind of film.
As a parent, I really liked how it emphasized the unintended consequences to war time aka damages to property and people. However, I also appreciated how the love a family shared helped the characters move past their dispute and eventually put their differences aside.
I asked my kids their thoughts afterward and my 14 year old son said that he really enjoyed the Dodge Ball Scene and pretty much anytime Christopher Walken was talking. My 12 year old daughter and youngest son said they really liked when Peter and Grampa Ed went fishing together and the antics that occurred.
Plus, they thought it was funny whenever Grandpa Ed’s pants fell down.
About the THE WAR WITH GRANDPA:
Based on Robert Kimmel Smith’s multi-award-winning beloved children’s book of the same name, the film follows a Sixth-grader named Peter (Oakes Fegley, The Goldfinch, This Is Where I Leave You) who is pretty much your average kid—he likes gaming, hanging with his friends and his beloved pair of Air Jordans.
But when his recently widowed grandfather Ed (Academy Award® winner Robert De Niro, The Irishman, Meet the Parents franchise) moves in with Peter’s family, the boy is forced to give up his most prized possession of all, his bedroom.
Unwilling to let such an injustice stand, Peter devises a series of increasingly elaborate pranks to drive out the interloper, but Grandpa Ed won’t go without a fight. Soon, the friendly combatants are engaged in an all-out war with side-splitting consequences.
