A special thank you goes out to Warner Bros for providing my family with a Digital Code for Steven Universe The Movie and details on how to set up this fun Rock Candy Experiment. Opinions expressed are that of my own.

We are in our 2nd week of Camp Warner Bros and this segment of activity has been a STEM theme with a Rock Candy Experiment AKA Crystal Gems inspired by Steven Universe The Movie.
As we continue to work on activities at home due to social distancing, it has been nice to have something that we could work on together as a family as well as observe daily.

Now my kids have not watched any of the Steven Universe Episodes on Cartoon Network so I can’t really tell you to much about the series.
Because of this, we decided to pass on the digital movie as a giveaway to someone who is already a big fan of the show. Keep reading on for more details.

Regardless of whether or not we are into the series, we are definitely into science experiments. You can learn more about Steven Universe by visiting Cartoon Network.
Plus, I think it is cool how this project incorporates the theme of Gems into the looks of Rock Candy. We ended up with a Amethyst Gem, Peridot Gem, and a Ruby Gem.

Rock Candy Experiment AKA Crystal Gems
Thanks to Camp Warner Bros we have a “How To” below on how to make Rock Candy. Now before you get started, please be advised that Adult Supervision is necessary at all times.

You probably have most of these items already laying around your home and all you need to do is follow the instructions in the photo.
FYI, we started to notice a real change after about 24 hours.

The Science Behind The Fun:
As time passes (and the solution cools), the water will slowly evaporate from the solution. As the water evaporates, the solution will become more saturated with sugar.

The sugar molecules will collect on the string, and the candy crystals will grow molecule by molecule!

Extra Science Fun:
Try making two jars of candy. In the first jar – seed your “Crystal Gem” Candy by rolling your string in water and sugar.
In the second jar do not seed your string with sugar before growing. Determine if using seed sugar crystals changes the growth rate of your “Crystal Gem” Candy!

Now that the kiddos and I have completed the Rock Candy Experiment, I have 5 tips.
#1. This definitely requires an adult the entire time because even after you let the solution cool for 10 minutes it is still pretty hot.

#2. If you don’t have a funnel, pour the solution after it cools into a measuring cup with a pour spout.
#3. As time passes a hard shell forms on the surface of the sugar mixture. I kept cracking it to help let the moisture evaporate.

4. Create more than one experiment. It is neat to see how color effects the changes and just in case there was an error in a batch, this might yield a better results.
5. Make sure you leave an inch and a half gap at the bottom of the jar so the rock candy doesn’t get stuck to the bottom. When we went to remove ours after a week, I had to cut out 2 of the 3 experiments.
