Thanks to the Manatee Memorial Hospital Foundation, I was given an opportunity to attend this year’s Speaking of Women’s Health event that was held on Saturday November 12, 2011, at the Manatee Convention Center located in Palmetto, Florida.

I started my day with picking up a goody bag that included health related information, coupons, and misc goodies provided by sponsors of the event. I then checked out the breakfast items and later I came back during a break and grabbed myself a cup if coffee and a bottle of orange juice provided by Tropicana.
Betty Chambliss Director of Advertising and Community Relations at Manatee Memorial, with Chef Tim Schoonmaker during the “Cooking with Fresh Herbs, Healthy Oils, and Lean Meats” Breakout Session.

This event, which draws attendees from around and in Florida’s Bradenton Manatee / Sarasota Area, featured speakers that were geared towards subjects to help women be strong, be healthy, and be in charge of their lives. This included Keynote Speaker Miss America 1999 Nicole Johnson, plus 4 periods of breakout sessions that included over 16 speakers.

Some of Chef Schoonmaker’s creations, including a Mango Salsa and Hummus with Pimentos.

I attended three of the Breakout Sessions including the Cooking with Fresh Herbs, Healthy Oils, and Lean Meats with Chef Tim Schoonmaker. Money Matters at Every Stage with Joyce Falken CTFA Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, Kelly Shane Regional Director Wells Fargo, and Ralph Nicosia CIMA Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and Less Stress, More Joy. Break Free from Stress with Judith A. Sedgeman, EdD. Each of the speakers were entertaining and informative, and I can’t complain about taste testing the delicious items Chef Tim Schoonmaker prepared.

I decided to take one of the breakout sessions off and used it as an opportunity to browse the silent auction. They had many great items to bid on including gift certificates, decorating items, and more.

Plus, I then visited the vendor booths inside of the convention center and I saw familiar businesses including Bonnie Wild’s Accessories Gone Wild and Bealls, which was there to facilitate a Bra Fitting event. I was excited to find out what my correct measurements were. Plus, certain vendors also provided various health screenings.

Of course one of the highlights of the day was the luncheon that included Keynote Speaker Miss America 1999 Nicole Johnson, a fashion show by Bealls, and food catered by Michael’s on East. Plus, they had a drawing for many great prizes including Tom Boy Tools.

I am so glad that I had an opportunity to check out this event, I learned a lot and already made one of the recipes I had taste tested.
