Thanks to Phase 4 Films, I was sent a copy of The Voyages of Young Doctor Dolittle on DVD to review with my kids here on At Home Moma.
The movie which stars Jane Seymour (Wedding Crashers, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman), Jason Alexander (Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Tim Curry (Charlie’s Angels, The Rocky Horror Picture Show) is about Doctor Dolittle’s nephew, also a John, who heads out on an adventure to save the animals of Dolittle Island.
I was actually excited when I saw the title of this DVD because it is based on the 1920’s children’s book series about Doctor Dolittle written by Hugh Lofting. We actually own a few of these older books and when my son was a baby, he loved for us to read him the story, “Doctor Dolittle and Pirates”.
About the story:
Once you watch this DVD, you will be singing “Animals Make the Very Best of Friends” because the song is really catchy.
When John’s Uncle left Dolittle Island, the animals were able to speak to humans. Ramsey the Ram was against this, and started trapping all of the animals and turning them all against one another. Once the Young Doctor Dolittle reaches the island he meets his Uncle’s animal friends, starts out on a journey, and ends up working with his Uncle’s animal friends to save the inhabitants of the island.
I thought this movie was really cute. My daughter who is 3 has been reciting lines from it, and my son who is almost 6 really enjoyed it as well. It has funny characters, a good story line, and a happy ending. I’m glad an old classic has been given a new spin.
The movie is rated G and was released on November 1, 2011. It runs for 80 minutes and has a Downloadable Activity Sheet. To learn more about this film visit phase4films.com Doctor Dolittle.
