Thanks to Poppo’s Taqueria, my family was invited to a media dine at their restaurant located at 4220 53rd Ave. East (State Road 70 and Lockwood Ridge) in Bradenton, FL. Opinions expressed in this post are mine.
Planning on visiting the South West Florida Area, Poppo’s Taqueria is a culinary hot spot located near the Bradenton Gulf Islands such as Anna Maria and Longboat Key as well as nearby St. Pete, and Tampa. This restaurant not only has a variety of fresh-to-order gourmet Mexican food, but gets it’s inspiration from the street vendors of San Francisco’s Bay Area.
Poppo’s Taqueria serves real ingredients including free range chicken, locally sourced wild boar chorizo, whole fresh produce from local suppliers and even house-made tortillas.
Upon our arrival we were greeted by the owner Patrick Coleman and while we headed up to the counter, he gave us a run down on the menu.
Their dishes consist of burritos, tacos, quesadillas and bowls and offers customers a wide variety of antibiotic and hormone free meats, vegetables and accompaniments built to order in front of the customer.
We happen to go on a Thursday night, and they were pretty busy. Since we are relatively new to the menu, hubby and I decided to throw caution to the wind and let the food artists at the counter put together custom creations for us.
As we waited for the food, I looked around and the interior definitely has an industrial feel with an open ceiling and primitive looking tables. You also see plenty of information about the food created here on black boards including local honey, organic produce, and natural meats. Their produce is organic as availability permits.
To provide some background about the restaurant, it originated on Anna Maria Island and now has 4 Locations in the Bradenton/ Sarasota area. To find one nearest you, visit poppostaqueria.com/hours-contact.
Our meal started with an appetizer of freshly made chips and Pico de Gallo.
While we continued to be served, we also headed up to Fountain Head Gourmet Craft Sodas station to grab beverages. FYI, these sodas do not contain High Fructose Corn Syrup.
We then decided to dine family style and shared a little with everyone.
You could imagine how fun this was for the 3 kids and we tried Tacos with pickled onions as well as burritos with pork and rice. We all agreed that these were delicious.
In addition, there was a Black Been Quesadilla as well as a Baby Bowl with Pork, which were both my hubby’s favorite items. Let me just say that the food was flavorful, colorful, and filling. Some of it was pretty spicy, however you can customize the way you want your dish, making it milder if your aren’t into the heat!
As for pricing Poppo’s Taqueria, dining options are affordable with Menu items start at $2.50 and topping out at $8.95.
During our visit, we also learned a little bit about the history of the restaurant and that the mural featured on the wall. It was that of who the restaurant received it’s name from, Patrick’s Grandfather “Poppo”.
Patrick shared, “Frank Harris (Poppo), who would’ve just celebrated his 100th birthday on March 10, was one of those unique people who makes those around him feel good about themselves. As a grandfather he was dedicated, fun, and always there to lend an ear. As a veteran reporter for the Boston Globe, he helped people by drawing attention to injustice.”
Continued…”For him, family always came before anything else, and through his love and support, he taught us to how to love and support each other. He spent the final years of his life on Pine Avenue in Anna Maria, just down the street from the original Poppo’s. Though he passed years ago, his example guides us in how we run our lives and our business, which bears his name.” From this and the other touches around the restaurant, you can really sense the love that has gone into this establishment.

Can’t wait to visit again with my family and try out new combinations of these dishes.
