The following is a sponsored post on behalf of the GreatCall Urgent Care 24/7 Medical Help App. Opinions expressed are that of my own.
Imagine a Sunday night and your little one is starting with a cough. There is no fever and he/she has a clear runny nose. You want to make your child comfortable so they will sleep well, but you also want to find out if you can give them a medication and what the correct dose is. This is not a moment to leave up to an internet search and you really want to speak with a medical professional.
The GreatCall Urgent Care app allows you to do exactly that. It provides access to a live nurse for advice 24/7 and if needed your call can be escalated to a board-certified physician. Services provided include health-related assessments, general health information, diagnosis or even a prescription. The app is FREE to download, and you are only charged if you place a call. The call rate is $3.99. In addition, you have access to a FREE easy-to-understand medical dictionary and you can also research your symptoms with the medical symptom checker tool.
My daughter happens to be getting over a cold and I used her scenario as a means to review this service. I first researched her symptom, and then placed a call via the app. After about 3 minutes or so, the line was answered by a receptionist. She acted like a Triage, and asked who I was calling for, what was going on, and my daughter’s name, age, and symptoms. Once she collected the information, she sent it onto a nurse. After a few minutes the nurse got on the line.
The nurse, whose name was Jennifer, then confirmed my daughter details. We then started discussing the condition and Jennifer asked me various questions about my daughter’s symptoms. The questions were extremely detailed.
Examples:
Does you daughter have a fever?
Is she vomiting?
Are her lips blue?
Is she wheezing?
After we narrowed down that it was not life threatening, we discussed ways to treat her. She said to stay away from medication based on her age, and gave me some ideas on how to keep her comfortable. One thing that was new to me, was warm apple juice seems to help a cough. I gave my daughter some warm juice before she went to bed, and it did seem to help, I did not hear any coughing in the night.
In addition, before the call was ended the nurse also instructed me to take my daughter to a Doctor if she had a fever, became lethargic, or her symptoms become more severe.
I feel that this app is great for when you don’t have time to run to the doctor or the office is closed, not mention in comes in handy on weekends and in the middle of night. This is technology at its best, and it is easy to use and extremely helpful to a mom like myself. The individuals handling my call were professional and understanding at the same time. I like the piece of mind of knowing that I am helping my children when they need it most.
As always in life threatening situations you should call 911, and you are directed to do so as well by the app.
